In a letter published this week, dozens of soldiers explained that the military salary that they receive is not enough to cover their basic needs. They normally work when they are on break from the army, but since they were on active duty most of the summer, they have not been able to work, and they are living in severe poverty. http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/1.616382 Poverty among Israeli soldiers is not a new phenominon.
A few years ago, Yad Eliezer staff members heard from an IDF commander that a number of his soldiers did not want to return home for the holidays, as they knew that if they remained on base they would at least have basic meals, a luxury that could not be guaranteed at home. Since then Yad Eliezer has been providing food vouchers to poor IDF soldiers each holiday to insure that at least their basic needs will be met. This
Rosh HaShana Yad Eliezer will be distributing
300 shekels worth of food vouchers to 300 IDF soldiers in need. They put their lives on the line for us. We can at least put some food on their holiday table.
